Lee County Commissioners David Mulicka and Kevin Ruane have confirmed that the new $1.33 million upgrade the county is doing to Crescent Beach Park at the base of the Matanzas Pass Bridge will no longer include astro-turf. There was a lot of push-baack on the turf idea because of how hot that surface gets in the summer. The new county plan includes sod in the center section of the park, along with several new shade structures.

The contract awarded to Vantage Construction Services and includes: shade structures and utility connections for the ADA-compliant modular restroom facility, integrated bike racks, a
picnic area, landscaped pedestrian path, four beach access points including one ADA-accessible route.

The project will be funded by FEMA funds, Regional Park impact fees and Tourist Development Taxes through the Beach and Shoreline Program.

Construction is anticipated to begin January 2026 with estimated completion in early summer 2026.

Lee County owns Crescent Beach Park which is just over the Matanzas Pass Bridge adjacent to Times Square. The park was heavily damaged by Ian and had to be fenced off for over a year as Commissioners and staff dealt with major projects across the entire county. After the storm the park was being used to sift debris from sand that was placed back on the beach. A major part of cleaning up the park was making sure all the tiny pieces of glass were removed from the sand.

The park reopened after Ian in January 2024.
