Keep Lee County Beautiful, once again joined millions of volunteers worldwide in the Ocean Conservancy’s annual International Coastal Cleanup. This year, more than 500 volunteers across 25 sites in Lee County removed 3,000 pounds of litter and debris from the environment. The ICC engages people across the globe to clean up beaches, waterways, and coastal areas, while also documenting the types of litter collected. Since the program’s beginning, over 18 million volunteers have collected nearly 385 million pounds of trash. For more than thirty years, Keep Lee County Beautiful has proudly served as the local host for this event. “Every piece of litter we remove is one less threat to wildlife, our waterways, and the health of our community,” said Trish Fancher, Executive Director of KLCB. “This cleanup is proof of what we can achieve when we work together. We hope the spirit of the cleanup inspires even more people to join us in protecting Lee County’s natural treasures year-round.” During the cleanup, volunteers logged the items they collected, contributing to the world’s largest repository of marine debris data. This information is used by scientists, governments, and environmental organizations to better understand and combat the global plastic pollution problem.
