(By Kim Ryan) At the last Cultural and Environmental Learning Center Advisory Board (CELCAB) meeting Director of Cultural Resources Alison Giesen gave a report that there are many exciting things going on even though the facility itself is not yet open for museum tours due to COVID-19. Here are just a few.
Guided kayak tours led by environmental educators so paddlers can experience the abundance of natural beauty of the ancient realm of the Calusa while exploring the winding mangrove creeks and hidden backwaters of the Estero Bay Aquatic Preserve.
Garden tours, which showcase what’s in bloom, and growing, in the gardens at Mound House and learn the latest information on how they are making the gardens a great place for local wildlife.
Beach walk tours, which start at Newton Park and affords participants the opportunity to explore the natural treasures on Fort Myers Beach through a guided walk along the shore.
The museum store, which is open Tues-Sat 9-4 by appointment only (with CDC guidelines in place). They also offer a virtual option with curbside pickup. Allison also passed out information on the new environmentally safe all natural sunscreen Caribbean Sol products being sold at the store.
The committee also discussed a project to provide audio tours at the museum and plans to raise funds to support this. Additionally, the website is undergoing a redesign to make it easier to navigate especially when making reservations for kayak tours. One of the many useful tabs is specifically for teachers with many helpful resources. These include information aligned with grade level Florida state standards and provide discussion questions and writing options just to name a few.
The Mound House is an island treasure and continues to be active even during the COVID-19 pandemic. Visit the website at moundhouse.org to get more information, where you can see all they have to offer members and non-members and where you can sign up for a tour.
