On Thursday the Fort Myers Beach town council voted to extend the contract of attorney John Herin for another year. Herin is paid $10,500 per month ($126,000 per year) for general services and $225 per hour additional for special projects with a cap of $100,000.

Herin says the $10,500 monthly fee includes things such as attending all the town meetings, looking over resolutions and ordinances.

The town also has insurance with the Florida League of Cities which offers legal services that cover such things as accidents, personal injury lawsuits, Bert Harris lawsuits against the town.

When Herin’s $225 per hour starts to kick in – above the $10,500 monthly fee – it’s for special issues such as the town council moving forward on items like foreclosing on businesses or property owners.

Councilman Dan Allers voted against keeping Herin on. He’d prefer to have a local attorney. Herin commutes from the Miami area where he works for the law firm of Fox Rothschild.
