Fort Myers Beach property owners may be eligible for reimbursement from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to help replace sand lost due to Hurricane Ian. Here are the details.
The Florida Hurricane Restoration Reimbursement Grant Program addresses coastal beach erosion incurred as a result of preparation for, or damage sustained from Hurricane Ian or Hurricane Nicole. In other words, if you lost sand or suffered beach erosion because of the storm you should apply for this grant money to possibly help you restore your beach.
$50 million was set aside for this program by the Florida Legislature during a special session this past December. Grants are awarded on a first-come first-served basis and are based on eligibility and a completed application. There are several pages you’ll need to fill out to be considered. Priority will be given to low-income and moderate-income applicants. In Lee County if your household income is less than $99,840 you qualify.
Each eligible applicant can receive up to $150,000 with a 50/50 homeowner match.
The eligible residential property must be:
A single-family, site-built, residential property where the homeowner has been granted a homestead exemption on the home under chapter 196, F.S.
– A residential condominium, as defined in chapter 718, F.S.
– A cooperative, as defined in chapter 719, F.S.
