This week, Fort Myers Beach is celebrating National Safe Boating Week, with U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 91 at the helm of local efforts.

The Lee County Board of County Commissioners has officially proclaimed May 17–23 as National Safe Boating Week, highlighting the need for vigilance and safety on our waterways.

Flotilla 91 is hosting a range of public events, including the “Meet the Coast Guard Auxiliary” breakfast at the Sunflower Café on Thursday, May 22 at 8 am. It’s a great opportunity to connect with local volunteers, ask questions, and learn how you can get involved.

Also on the schedule is the “Boat America” class on May 24 at the Pine Ridge Community Center. This course covers responsible boating fundamentals and successful graduates earn the Florida Boater Education I.D. card.

The county proclamation reminds us that most boating accidents are due to human error, and drowning remains the leading cause of death—often preventable by wearing a life jacket.

Flotilla 91 Commander Robert Guenthner says, “Don’t leave boating safely up to luck. Education is the key to staying safe on the water.
