FWC Research is For The Birds

Literally! The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is working on its Species Conservation Measures and Permitting Guidelines and wants public feedback concerning four state-listed beach-nesting birds: the American oystercatcher, snowy plover, least tern and black skimmer.

FWC says several species of shorebirds and seabirds nest along the beaches of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of Florida. Habitat loss and degradation associated with coastal development has largely restricted many of these species to stretches of beach within parks and preserves. And, this group of birds is particularly sensitive to human disturbance since environmental conditions on beaches are already harsh and unpredictable.

The guidelines are intended to provide information on rule requirements as they relate to permitting. They also provide information on the species’ range, survey methodology and voluntary practices that can benefit the species.
