Fire Chief Matt Love Resigning

While he wasn’t chosen as the Fire Chief in Loveland, Colorado last week, Fort Myers Beach Fire Chief Matt Love has notified the fire board of Commissioners he wants them to start the process of looking for his replacement. Love is fielding offers from around the country. He has not said when his final day will be.

Fire Department Cancels 9/11 Event

The Fort Myers Fire Department has canceled its September 11th commemoration event due to rising COVID cases. The beach wreath-laying event was scheduled for September 10th at Station 33 on Lenell Road.

Court Appearance for Shooter Pushed Back

Jatavion Craig, who’s accused of the Memorial Day shooting on Fort Myers Beach, was scheduled to appear in court Thursday. That appearance has been pushed back to Monday and he remains in the Lee County jail.

Confirmed COVID Case Closes Sanibel Rec Center

On Thursday the City of Sanibel was advised that a Rec Center staff member, who was on duty Wednesday afternoon, has tested positive for COVID. As a result the Rec Center will be closed today while the facility is disinfected. The city is contact tracing anyone who was in the facility Wednesday.

Diseased Turtles Becoming an Issue

On Thursday the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission issued executive order #21-19 that states the take or transport of all freshwater softshell turtle species or yellow-bellied sliders is prohibited until the order is repealed.
