Here’s The Latest On The Vaccine

On Monday The Florida Department of Health and Lee County Government announced that about 9,000 doses of the Covid-19 vaccine will be administered this week to frontline healthcare workers and seniors 65 and older. As of last week, over 11,000 individuals have been vaccinated at Lee County sites.

The 2021 Shrimp Festival Has Been Canceled.

COVID strikes again. It's hard to imagine how much money will be lost for the organizations the Fort Myers Beach Lions Club helps every year from the Shrimp Festival. One year ago, this event was one of the first to be canceled due to the pandemic. On Monday the Lions Club had to make that call again. Here's their official statement...

Publix Liquor Store Denied

An agitated Fort Myers Beach Mayor Ray Murphy told Publix representatives Monday that the company has to work with the town more. "I'm not going to support more liquor when we need a pharmacy." Murphy made a motion to deny Publix's request to add a liquor store onto its 4790 Estero Boulevard location and it passed by a vote of 4-1.

This Week on Estero Boulevard

Starting today, and every Tuesday moving forward, we plan to give you an update on the Estero Boulevard road project. This week, contractors for the Town and Lee County are installing new water main, sanitary sewer force main, storm drainage, and sidewalk and rebuilding roadway on the Boulevard from Strandview Avenue/Publix to the south end of the island.

In conjunction with the City of Sanibel Vegetation Committee, the City of Sanibel Department of Recreation will be hosting a youth contest to celebrate Arbor Day.  The awareness and education activities include an essay or poem contest for youth grades 4 through 8.

Monday is a Big Day For The Future of Bay Oaks

Before the regularly scheduled town council meeting Monday, the Fort Myers Beach town council and the Bay Oaks Recreational Campus Advisory Board will hold a special meeting to attempt to get on the same page regarding the future of the campus. As things stand now, the two sides are very far apart.

Traffic Light Firm Approved

The town council approved a $494,000 contract for Ajax Paving Industries to construct a traffic signal at Estero Boulevard and Old San Carlos Boulevard. Ajax was the lowest bidder for the project with the highest coming in at over $776,000. The light will be coordinated with another light Lee County is installing at Crescent and Estero Boulevard.

Town To Consider Publix Liquor Store

The Publix Supermarket, located at 4791 Estero Boulevard, may soon have a liquor store attached to it. On Monday the town council will consider a motion to grant the 1,500 foot liquor store to publix. The town has been pressuring the supermarket giant to improve the traffic flow exiting the property.

11th Annual Putt & Pub Crawl Canceled

Town Manager Roger Hernstadt would not issue a permit for the January 16th Woman's Club fundraiser that helps about ten community organizations. The reason for the denial is an April, 2020 COVID emergency declaration, the previous council approved, that requires Hernstadt to deny the permit.

The Bay Oaks committee has a big meeting planned with the Town Council Monday morning at 9AM. The committee plans to state its case about the watered down version of the new campus that Town Manager Roger Hernstadt pitched to the council without the committee's knowledge.
