Larry Wood Not Running For Re-Election
After serving 9 years as a Fort Myers Beach Fire Commissioner, Larry Wood has confirmed he will not be running for re-election when his term expires at the end of this year. Ron Fleming is also up for re-election and he is running.
Salty Crab Owner Asks Town For Parking Relief
Before Hurricane Ian The Salty Crab Restaurant operated successfully for years with no onsite parking. Town code would now require owner Greg Powers to have 62 parking spaces in order to rebuild. He's asking for a variance to eliminate the parking requirement completely.
Turtle & Shorebird Reminders
FWC is sharing some important information about turtles and birds now that we are several weeks into the nesting season. Beachgoers can help ensure nesting success for both by giving them space, removing beach furniture and trash before leaving for the day, keeping beaches clean and dark, and never disturbing their nests.
Church Members Vote Unanimously to Sell Property
By a vote of 90 to 0 members of Beach Baptist voted to sell 2 acres of their property for $4 million to a developer. Pastor Shawn Critser is expected to sign close the deal Wednesday. Proceeds from the sale will be used to build a new church. Here is an early rendering of the new church building.
Town Rejects Beach Renourishment Protest
On Monday the Fort Myers Beach Town Council dismissed a bid protest from Callan Marine for the beach's big renourishment project. The Council then awarded the contract to Ahtna Marine with the project now expected to begin next month.
One More Hearing to Go For North End 7-11
The Neighborhood Company made its presentation Monday for the third 7-11 location the company is working to rebuild. The Town Council voted 4-0 to move the item to a second public hearing June 3rd. If approved next month, construction can begin.
White to Sign Books at All Four Doc Ford’s
Author Randy Wayne White is visiting all four Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grille locations in June to sign copies of his newest book in the Doc Ford series. One Deadly Eye will be released June 4th.
Whale Weekend Raises Thousands
During groundbreaking celebration weekend, Whale owners Mike and Dawn Miller hosted a dunk tank to raise money for two local organizations, The Beach Kids Foundation and the Bob Tabarrini Foundation.
Old Fire House Up For Sale
The 5,408 square foot fire station at 3043 Estero Boulevard is up for sale. The building was heavily damaged by Hurricane Ian and has not been used since. The Fire District will be accepting sealed bids on the .14 acre lot until July 8th. The property was recently assessed at $1.1 million.Â
Sandy Bottom’s Could Be Open By October
The former Tuckaway Cafe building, now owned by Mike and Dawn Miller, at 2301 Estero Boulevard could be converted to Sandy Bottom's Restaurant and open for business by October of this year.
Dunlap To Be Appointed to LPA
On June 3rd the Fort Myers Beach Town Council will appoint Egret Street resident Jim Dunlap to fill the open seat on the LPA. The seat came open when Patrick Vanasse stepped down after serving for 5 years. Dunlap was the only qualified candidate to apply for the seat.
