DeSantis Wants To Give You Money

On Monday Florida Governor Ron DeSantis proposed a rebate to homesteaded property owners of about $1,000 which he says will “deliver immediate property tax relief to Florida homeowners.” If approved by the legislature your check would arrive in December.

This proposal would benefit over 5.1 million homesteaded properties across Florida. Governor DeSantis has been pushing a plan to eliminate property taxes through a future constitutional amendment.

Desantis: “Property taxes effectively require homeowners to pay rent to the government. Constitutional protections for Florida homeowners require approval of the voters in 2026. In the meantime, Floridians need relief. I am today proposing a plan that will result in—on average—$1,000 rebate checks for each household as a discount on their property taxes. If the Legislature acts on this plan now, we can get this done this year. Let’s get this done for the people of Florida this session.”

  1. Did anyone catch the average is $1000? So the mansions will be getting the lion’s share hike the common homes will be getting much less.

  2. When the Homestead program started, the exemption was $5000 and median homestead property was $4500, so most protected homeowners paid no property tax. Instead of eliminating it altogether, raise the exemption to $250,000. Selfishly, I appreciate out of state and people paying these huge prices paying these local taxes.

  3. Please. We worked all our lives to have a home and now as retired seniors, between property taxes and property insurance we can’t afford to keep them. We need a permanent relief solution.
