Discovery Center Booming in September, October

Florida Master Naturalist Tony Mauriello is presenting several free interpretive programs at the new Welcome & Discovery Center at Lovers Key State Park in September and October.

The programs will be held indoors in the Community Room or in the Outdoor Classroom and registration is not required. Here is the full schedule of events…

Weds. Sept 22, 2021
Butterflies in Southwest Florida – Butterflies inspire and amaze with their miraculous transformation from an earthbound caterpillar into a dazzling winged marvel. This metamorphosis will be explored, as well as the native food plants integral to the life cycle of these beautiful insects. An introduction to butterflies most common in Southwest Florida, their relationship with other pollinators, and how they contribute to the local ecosystem.

Weds. Oct 6th, 2021
Beach Birds in Southwest Florida – Southwest Florida beaches are a wonderful place to observe shorebirds. In addition to resident Gulls and Ospreys, migration brings Sandpipers, Terns, Skimmers, and many other interesting birds to our shores. Helpful hints will be provided on how to identify shorebirds and the various species you might see along the beaches and estuaries.

Florida Native Palms – The palm family are mostly native to the tropics and subtropics. There are hundreds of species and come in many forms. All though we see many in our landscapes, there are only 12 native to Florida. We will look at all twelve, their forms and unique characteristics.

FEES: All Nature at Noon Programs are FREE with paid entrance to the park:
$4.00 for vehicles with one individual.
$8.00 for vehicles with two to eight individuals.
$2.00 per pedestrian or cyclist.
