The Fort Myers Beach and Iona McGregor Fire Control Districts are conducting a study to determine whether a merger of the two districts would be beneficial to taxpayers. A community forum is being held on the issue, February 19th, 5PM at Margaritaville.
The public is invited to the forum to provide input and ask questions. The Fort Myers Beach Fire Control District will broadcast the event live on their YouTube Channel and Beach Talk Radio will broadcast from the event and take questions virtually from our live audience.
Fort Myers Beach Fire Control District Chief Scott Wirth says, “Your perspective is vital to us who serve you, and we truly hope you can join us in person.”
The study is being paid for by the taxpayers in both districts. The merger is being pushed by Florida State Representative Adam Botana. He believes there are too many special districts in the state of Florida and merging them will save taxpayers money. He is also pushing to merge the Fort Myers Beach mosquito control district with the Lee County mosquito control district. That Bill has been approved by the local state delegation and moved on to Tallahassee for consideration where, if approved, would go on the 2026 ballot.
