On Tuesday, April 15, from 4:30 to 6 p.m., members and friends of the Estero Island Historic Society are invited to an evening of Cocktails & Conversation—a gathering to celebrate and connect with local nonprofit organizations working to protect the history and environment of Estero Island. The public is invited to attend this event.
Join the Estero Island Historic Society, Ostego Bay Foundation, and Friends of Matanzas Pass Preserve as we share our stories and thank residents and visitors for your support in rebuilding and preserving what makes this island so special.
Come meet your neighbors, enjoy a drink, and learn how you can be a part of safeguarding Estero Island—past, present, and future.
My four years as president of the society (1999-2003) were truly fun times. We got the second cottage that became the annex and the outpouring of help with it was amazing. Tommy Doyle, now the county’s election supervisor, moved it for free from across the street on the Gulfside, Bill Semmer wired it for free and Gene Whitley built the connecting deck for a small charge. All of that board is gone now except for Fran Santini and it’s in great hands with Ellie Bunting and her volunteers.
By the way, next year will mark 100 years since the first bridge connected the mainland to the island, opening it to homes and commerce.
I hope there’s a big turnout for the April 15th conversation and lots of gitchie offered up to its treasury. The island has a long and fascinating history and its residents a hundred years of devotion to its environmental health.
Be there or be square.
