Will McKannay was the unanimous Town Council choice to replace the departing Andy Hyatt as Fort Myers Beach Town Manager back on April 18th. Last week he agreed to contract terms and on Monday the Town Council will vote on the new contract.

The 2-year contract calls for the town to pay McKannay a salary of $200,000 per year and up to $22,500 to relocate his family from Colorado. The salary the town will pay McKannay is approximately the same as what was being paid to Hyatt.

McKannay will get a town issued cell phone and laptop. The town will also pay 100 percent of his health, dental and vision insurance and 50% of health, dental and vision for his wife. If McKannaey chooses to participate in the town’s pension plan, the town will contribute 10% into the plan and McKannay would have to put in 20%.

McKannay must give the town 120 days notice if he decides to resign or not extend his contract. The Town Council can extend his contract in one year increments 90 days before it expires. If McKannaey resigns before being on the job for one year he must return the relocation money to the town within 30 days.

McKannay is a former Commander in the U.S. Army in Fort Riley, Kansas. He plans to be on the job Monday, May 19th, which is the date of the second town council meeting of the month. There’s expected to be about a month overlap with Hyatt staying on an extra month, or as long as McKannay needs, to help make this a smooth transition.

Mackannay’s performance will be reviewed every May.

  1. Good idea, Mary-
With a $200,000 salary plus military pension, McKannay may actually be able to afford Beach real estate, insurance, and taxes!

    • He will certainly feel an authentic vibe if he is being presented with all the perks and problems of living on the beach. I expect him to change the mood from sad and depressed to positive, forward looking , let’s get on with it. He can show that people aren’t afraid , we aren’t lemmings mindlessly fleeing. The newspaper articles have been awful. We need to change that perspective. Alive and well and having fun. Including the employees of our great town

  2. I hope he will buy or rent a house on Fort Myers Beach. He needs to be invested in the beach. Think of the difference between Tommy Torgerson and Seagate. To understand the frustrations of traffic, FEMA , the county and state government he needs to become an Islander . I know Ed, you do not own on the beach but you do live every beach moment and have been there since day one. We need our new town manager to totally embrace us.
