Lee County property owners who would like more information about the Clerk’s free Property Fraud Alert Service are encouraged to attend a free class hosted by County Clerk and Comptroller Kevin Karnes.

The How-To class will take place virtually on Thursday, May 15 from 2-3 p.m. through the online platform Zoom.

Property fraud occurs when a party uses a forged deed to sell or transfer property that does not belong to them. The Lee Clerk’s office offers a free service called Property Fraud Alert. It helps protect your property by notifying you within 24 hours if someone files a deed or other official record in your name.

Karnes is urging property owners to register for the Clerk’s Property Fraud Alert after a recent arrest and separate conviction for property fraud-related events. These incidents show the need for all home and property owners to register for the free service.

During the class, attendees will learn the following:

  •         How to register for Property Fraud Alert, step-by-step
  •         How to check if you’ve already registered
  •         What the alert notification process entails and next steps if you get an alert
  •         Different ways to register your name
  •         How to find your parcel ID if you would like to add additional protection

In addition to the Property Fraud Alert service, the class will also cover information on how to file a property deed with the Clerk’s Official Records department.

The class is free, but registration is required. To register for this event GO HERE.
