The lower building of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church will be knocked down. The original plan was to start yesterday, however, it’s been pushed back one week. The church was also notified their tent, where they hold weekly services, will need to come down during demo.
Here’s what we know about the future of the church.
The church buildings were heavily damaged on September 28, 2022 when Hurricane Ian swept through Southwest Florida.
The church is planning to repair the main building and use it for worship, offices and meeting space. They are unsure at this time what the plan is for replacing the lower building. They are currently working with an architect and looking for a general contractor and they are optimistic they are under FEMA’s 50% rebuild rule.
The church has been holding Sunday services in the parking lot under a big tent since shortly after the storm. They have about 70 active members, including snowbirds. They also have members from Chapel by the Sea, Beach United Methodist Church, some of the neighbors, and a few people from the Catholic Church that attend on a regular basis.
St. Peter’s has been a part of the Fort Myers Beach community since 1967.
