  1. Short answer: yes. Medical marijuana is completely legal and prescribed by real doctors. Many people with chronic pain, debilitating illness, and other concerns are reportedly helped by this treatment and has reduced the use of dangerous pain pill abuse. FMB has the right to not allow this type of business in its jurisdiction, but the fear mongering of the increased traffic accidents and falling trees is way over the top. Kudos to Councilor Safford for bringing up this topic for civil discussion.

    • ‘Real Drs” should know this:” Cannabis use may increase the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke independent of tobacco use, according to recent findings in the Journal of the American Heart Association. Compared with nonusers, daily cannabis consumers had 25% higher odds of myocardial infarction and 42% higher odds of stroke. More frequent use was associated with a greater possibility of adverse cardiovascular outcomes regardless of whether cannabis was smoked, eaten, or vaporized.”……That Quote is from the JAMA Network website. Our island is only miles long. If someone needs their weed they can drive 4 miles either way and get their weed. If not, most of those places deliver. Let them have their weed delivered. I don’t want it in my community. A friend of mine who was a daily cannabis user just had a massive heart attack and 3 stents put in. His surgeon told him to stop the cannabis immediately or next time he might not be so lucky. He’s 55 yrs old and a runner. Now he has 3 stents and a damaged heart.

      • Sorry about your friend that jogged while high. I’m not going to quote medical journals. This is the reality of the situation. You all hate traffic but want people to drive what you say is four miles. Make it make sense. My stance isn’t any different. I know people that have benefitted without the nightmare scenario you describe. Know many others that have been affected by the pharma bros pain pill farm abuse with much worse results. It wouldn’t affect our town one percent to discuss the issue at the leadership level. That process has been brought forward and here we are.

        • I never said my friend jogged while high. I said he was a jogger and was fit. But with his good habits, he also was a cannabis user and ended with a massive heart attack and 3 stents.

  2. This is ridiculous of them considering to allow this on the beach. Way to make it classy. I guess they want to live up to the trashy reputation FMB has, why not offer drugs in addition to the alcohol. Better watch out if you are a pedestrian, you will get plowed. Go ahead town, budget to put up guard rails along Estero. We will need that before functioning street turtle lights.

FYI… regular cannabis use whether edible or smoking has a 24% higher risk of heart attack and 42% increase risk of stroke. Doesn’t matter if it’s “prescribed” still the same risks.

    • Medical marijuana is just a tiny fraction of the actual illegal smoking of cannabis on the island. I smell it almost everywhere I go… On the beach, coming from cars, wafting in from boats out on the water, coming from residences. LOL

  3. Seriously? We are still driving in the dark, traffic is a constant issue, we still have homes/buildings that are ready to fall down, dead trees left from Ian are everywhere and Sanford is worrying about weed? Really? AND to any “polls” that are being taken, really need to be owners/residents ONLY. We end up with a bunch of tourists or wannabe residents that live in another state chiming in and saying “YES” and they don’t have to deal with what it brings. Car insurance goes up, crime goes up, homelessness goes up. There are places off island that people can buy it and bring it onto the island. We have a stripper place opening up at the base of the bridge that will be attracting lower class people and we sure don’t need weed being sold on the island. Shut up Sandford and take a seat if you actually think this is something important for owners/residents on the beach. We have other issues that you should be focusing on.

  4. Put it to a vote and let the residents speak. I don’t see the medical industry prescribing cigarettes to anyone for their health and yet those are sold everywhere. You can also say the same thing about alcohol.

    • FYI: This Quote is from an article from CNN which being they are a Liberal network, they tend to be pro cannabis. “Car crashes involving weed were serious. In marijuana-involved accidents, nearly 90% of the victims arrived by ambulance, the study found. When no alcohol or cannabis was involved, the number of people that required an ambulance dropped to 40%. In addition, nearly 50% of marijuana users in a car accident required hospital admission, compared to just over 6% of those who did not use.

Intensive care admissions were also higher. Nearly 22% of accidents involving those driving while stoned needed intensive care, compared to just less than 2% of crashes without alcohol or cannabis involvement, according to the study published Wednesday in the journal JAMA Network Open.

“Because of the way that cannabis impacts driving performance — it reduces reaction time, decreases the ability to focus or pay attention to multiple events, and may increase risk-taking behavior — people who are cannabis-impaired while driving may be driving faster, noticing hazards later, and deaccelerating slower … a recipe for getting into more severe traffic collisions and requiring higher levels of care,” Myran said in an email.

      • Anyway, the driving under the influence laws apply to cannabis the same as alcohol, so those under the influence shouldn’t be driving in the first place. Also noteworthy, the same laws apply to prescribed pain medication.

  5. The simple answer is no. Marijuana remains illegal to possess, cultivate, or traffic under federal law. However, there have been inconsistencies in the federal enforcement of medical marijuana. Many medical marijuana patients, dispensaries, and providers are still unclear.
Yes, you can face criminal charges for possession of marijuana. Marijuana is classified as an illegal Schedule I drug by the CSA. Marijuana possession, cultivation, distribution, and use are illegal according to federal law. The law does not recognize the medical use of marijuana or distinguish it from recreational use.

Even in states that allow medical marijuana, you may still be arrested, charged, prosecuted, and sent to federal prison on drug-related charges. If you possess or cultivate more marijuana than your state allows, you can be charged.
