The Wyndham has not been touched since Hurricane Ian. It’s been a dangerous eyesore on the south end for over 2 years and the town is finally stepping in.
Fort Myers Beach Operations and Compliance Manager Frankie Kropacek said town staff met with the owners of the Wyndham and told them to get a demo permit to knock the buildings on their property down.
The town red-tagged the building 3 months ago and still nothing had been done. Watco Construction received a demo permit on November 25th to remove the 3 buildings and the pool on the property. Kropcaek says the owner now has 30 days to clean up the property or the town will take care of it for them. “If they don’t act within 30 days, the town will.”
The permit on record indicates the cost Watco is charging is $200,000. Town Manager Andy Hyatt said Monday the estimate the town received to do the job was $600,000. If the town has to pay that bill, taxpayers will cover the cost up front with the bill then added to the property owners tax bill in 2025.
Such tough talk from the town
all of a sudden.
A little late to save those discounts and the town from probation.
Where was it a year or more ago when FEMA was insisting on on all of this.
And why now the threat to Wyndham when the same wasn’t done to address Neptune’s mess, that motel that now has been gifted doubled density for its rebuild and no punishment at all for leaving its rotted and stinking destruction beside the boulevard for two years while this council calls the place good neighbors
Perhaps not corruption but some of this government’s actions have themselves caused understandable reason for suspicions – corrupt or just incompetence?
I think the latter.
I would prefer this eyesore (which is not a safety hazard ) to what’s coming unless a miracle occurs and we stick to the Comp plan-
The Town Council is not equipped to pick winners and losers and deal with all these one offs –
They are chosen to execute the laws and comp plan on the book – if they want to effect change , go thru the process and have it approved and executed across the board .
This TC is beyond a shit show-
End all the emergency declarations and get back to regular order –
Just like the federal GOVT went to shit when they veered from regular order so has FMB – a very corrupt , dangerous road we are on
“End the emergency declarations”??
Perhaps educate yourself on why those declarations are necessary, including the ability to obtain federal and state funding and grants for storm-related damage repairs, mitigation, and revenue replacement.
Again, more progress. Hopefully someone will develop this property with something nicer than was there before. The south end needs it
Again, finally some progress! Hopefully this property will be developed soon so FMB can become a thriving island once more
The way our TC has handled this situation is ridiculous. They have used loud voices to make threatening (or else) statements for more than 2 years with no action by Wyndham. Why should Wyndham care what you say when you never back it up with action? I suggest doing your jobs, TC and staff. How about less talk and more action.
Brilliant …Chris
Considering the vote on Monday it might be better to keep looking at the wreckage. Who knows what might go in there. 17 stories is a possibility
Which would be better than that mess that is there now.
The town threatened to demolish buildings and place a lien over a year ago. Never happened. This is part of the reason why our flood policies will increase. The city manager and compliance manager need to be fired.
Or else what? We found out Monday our Town won’t stand up for what’s right or stand up for its tax payers!
Because that would be smart! And why do the taxpayers have to pay the cost of knocking down a building the owners have the means to pay for it. Let’s be real! That place was a goldmine! Absolutely ridiculous!
The town (taxpayers) only advance the cost. If the town is forced to demo the property, a tax lien would be filed by the town to recover its costs of demolition.
Not a tax lien Holly, sorry but you are not always correct. The demo costs get certified to the tax rolls and get paid back to the Town when the taxes get paid. The Town has to pay the demo costs first. Depending on timing, may not get certified until the 2026 taxes.
PS. Are you an attorney? You seem to think you know everything about the law and town ordinances.
It doesn’t even appear that their permit has been approved? When it is approved, why doesn’t the town just pay that contractor to do it instead of paying three times as much?
