We Are Down to 24

Our friends at Turtle Time have updated the latest Fort Myers Beach turtle stats: There are now 24 remaining nests to hatch compared to last weeks 32.

For the past five years, FWC has required that nest surveys begin April 15 so that early nests are not overlooked. Sanibel documented their first nest of this season on April 15 – right on cue!  The first nest on Fort Myers Beach occurred on April 30.

Our last new nest was recorded on August 1, but the folks at Turtle Time tell us they are not giving up hope for just one more nest. You may recall that FMB had its first ever green turtle nest last year (Chelonia mydas). Green sea turtle nesting season begins in June and extends through late September…so there is (optimistically) still time.
