When Will Those Confusing Lines Be Fixed?

Many of you have seen the striped line confusion at the base of the Matanzas Pass Bridge. As it is laid out now, it appears the right turn lane, as you approach the bridge, has the right-of-way to get on the bridge. Why?

If you survive the squeeze speed battle, at the now regular traffic signal at Prescott/Buttonwood, and you’re in the left lane to get onto the bridge you now have to be a little careful right at the base of the bridge. There are striped white lines that appear to give the right lane of traffic the right-of-way to veer onto the bridge. Once the state’s work is done there will be two lanes getting onto the bridge. There are also still road work barrels that have been sitting at the base of the bridge without much work being done in that area for weeks.

We reached out to the Florida Department of Transportation to see what the timeframe is to get the street striping taken care of so there is a clear understanding who really has the right-of-way approaching the bridge.

Florida Department of Transportation District One Public Information Specialist David Scarpelli told Beach Talk Radio the traffic shift to two lanes across the bridge is anticipated to occur within the next month, weather permitting. “As we get closer to the transition, a media release will be shared to inform the public of the upcoming change. In the meantime, additional merge signs have been installed between Buttonwood/Prescott and Main Street to help alert motorists and minimize confusion.”

  1. It would be great if the light at Buttonwood and San Carlos can be brought into the 21st century. there is no reason that the light cycles with no cross or left turning cars. The light should be green for San Carlos unless triggered by actual cars.

  2. Government at its best…..as it sits now, the right lane has the right of way, and the left lane merges into it at the base of the bridge going on island. But, the merge sign on the road says that the right lane is merging into the left lane. Total opposite, which is a big cause of confusion.
