With the retirement of Mick Denham, who took over for Lee County Board Chair Kevin Ruane, the Sanibel City Council will appoint a new Mayor on March 16th during an organizational meeting.
At that meeting, three new council members will also be sworn in after winning election to the council this week. Mike Miller (23.6%), John Henshaw (23%) and Dr. Scott Crater (21.8%) were the top three vote getters on March 2nd.
Once the new members are sworn in they will choose a Mayor.
Holly Smith has been serving as Vice Mayor under Denam and is the favorite to be appointed by her colleagues.
The retiring Mick Denham was first elected to the Sanibel City Council in 2005 and was re-elected in 2009, 2013 and 2017. Denham served as Mayor 2007-2010. He has also served as Vice Mayor in 2005-2007; 2010-2013; 2015-2019.
On November 17, 2020 Denham served as Acting Mayor when long-time Mayor Kevin Ruane won his Lee County Board election, and was appointed Mayor by the council on December 1, 2020.
