31-year old Cape Coral resident Jorge Rivera (pictured here) is in the Lee County jail charged with DUI manslaughter following a Thursday night accident that killed a female bicyclist.
Florida Highway Patrol reports that Rivera was traveling south on Estero Boulevard when his Chevy Equinox hit the cyclist from behind, who was also riding south, on Estero Boulevard in the bike lane.
The collision caused the rider, who was on a motorized bicycle, to become separated from the bicycle. She was not wearing a helmet and pronounced dead at the scene. The FMB fire department reports she was in her late 40’s or early 50’s.
The vehicle traveled off the road and into a mailbox at 5400 Estero Boulevard. Rivera was not injured in the accident.
The incident took place at 9:30PM Thursday evening. While authorities had the area blocked off for the accident, another vehicle drove through the area and the female driver was also arrested for drunk driving. Troopers identified the driver as Denise Karda (pictured right) of Fort Myers Beach and placed her under arrest.
The name of the person killed in the accident was not released. FHP is reporting Rivera is from Lehigh Acres. LCSO is reporting he’s from Cape Coral.
