Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grille on Sanibel is hosting its second annual 7K race in celebration of National Yucatán Shrimp Day. The length of the run breaks from the traditional 5K format in honor of the seven ingredients in the restaurant’s Yucatán shrimp.”

Last year’s inaugural event brought in 350 runners and walkers and raised $7,500 for the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation’s Sea School. This year’s goal is to raise $10,000 for the nonprofit J.N. “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society.

“Doc Ford’s is a long-time supporter of J.N. “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society, and we are happy to help by donating to the cause,” said Joe Harrity, a partner with HM Restaurant Group, which owns and operates Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grille. “The idea of a 7K race originated with our employees and has become an annual event.”

The run begins at 7 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, and starts and finishes at Doc Ford’s Sanibel location. Registration is $45 plus a $5.80 sign-up fee for participants 11 years and older. Additional details on race packet pickup will be announced soon.

Following the race, guests are invited to continue the experience at Doc Ford’s, which opens early at 10 a.m. for post-run festivities. Race day perks include a complimentary mojito for participants, live chef demonstrations of the restaurant’s signature Yucatán shrimp, a photobooth and free drink stations sponsored by RNDC featuring Captains For Clean Water cocktails.

Awards will be presented to the top three male and female runners and by age groups. Timer Lin-Mark Sports will text results live as they happen and posts videos of each runner and walker crossing the finish line.
