The City of Sanibel is asking local businesses, organizations, places of worship, and community gathering spaces to help spread awareness of A Field of Heroes, a community-wide tribute commemorating the 25th Anniversary of September 11, 2001.
The City is seeking partners willing to display posters and flyers in their businesses and facilities throughout the summer to help inform residents and visitors about this meaningful remembrance project.
A Field of Heroes will feature 2,977 American flags, one for every life lost on September 11, 2001, and will be installed at Sanibel Community Park beginning September 1, 2026. The memorial will serve as a powerful visual reminder of the lives lost and the heroes who emerged on that historic day.
Community members will have the opportunity to sponsor flags in honor of first responders, military members, loved ones, or heroes of 9/11. Funds raised through the project will support the creation and presentation of this special memorial. As of today, July 7th, we have sponsors for 25% of the flags for the display.
Businesses willing to display a poster or provide space for informational flyers can help ensure that this tribute reaches as many members of the community as possible.
Then, on September 11, 2026, at 8:15 a.m., the City of Sanibel will host a special Waves of Remembrance Ceremony at the Sanibel Community House. This commemorative gathering will honor the victims, survivors, first responders, military personnel, and countless heroes impacted by the events of September 11, 2001. Through reflection, remembrance, and shared stories, the community will come together to pay tribute to those lost, recognize acts of courage and sacrifice, and reaffirm the enduring spirit of unity that emerged from one of our nation’s most difficult days. Following the ceremony, attendees are invited to visit the Field of Heroes at Sanibel Community Park for personal reflection among the 2,977 flags representing each life lost on 9/11.
“We are hoping to create a truly community-wide effort,” said Andrea Miller, Sanibel Recreation Department Director. “By simply displaying a sign or flyer, businesses can help honor those lost on September 11 and encourage participation in this important memorial.”
