(By Fire Chief Matt Love) Sometimes in this fast paced way of life, we forget the ones who sacrifice their lives every day for the betterment of others. It’s hard to believe the tragic events of 9/11 happened 19 years ago, yet we are frequently reminded of the many innocent lives lost. This tragedy affected all of us in some way, and this day never gets easier even as years pass.
The 9/11 attacks not only became the single deadliest terrorist attack in human history, they were also the deadliest incident ever for Firefighters, EMS workers, and Law Enforcement Officers in the United States. The New York City Fire Department lost 343 among their ranks, while 23 New York Police Officers and 37 Port Authority Officers lost their lives, according to the 9/11 Commission that investigated the attacks and emergency response.
Not only did we lose several service members, we lost over 2,500 innocent civilians in the attacks of 9/11. This horrific event continues to wreak havoc mentally and physically for many people who survived one of the worst days in history.
This day will always be remembered as we thank all who selflessly gave their lives to serve and protect our country. Please take time to remember the fallen and to appreciate the freedoms we enjoy thanks to our service men and women.
