Vice Mayor Jim Atterholt told the Town Council on Monday that he would not seek or accept the nomination as Vice Mayor if any of the other council members were thinking of nominating him.
Atterholt has been Vice Mayor since Dan Allers was chosen to be Mayor by the council 3 years ago. Both the Mayor and Vice Mayor are chosen by the Town Council.
Attorholt has three years remaining on his second term as a Town Council member after being easily re-elected in November of 2024. He says it’s time to pass the baton onto someone else and made the announcement Monday to avoid any “dramatic moment” a month from now when the Mayor and Vice Mayor are chosen again as they are every November.

Maybe Jim should be mayor now. It’s time to switch things up and believe Jim is more qualified to be mayor than the others. We know what it’s like with Allers being mayor and had 3 years of that, so it’s time to let Jim become mayor. Things become stagnant when it’s the same, year after year. This is all a pony show anyways on FMB, it’s not like the mayor has any power to get anything done in this town, unlike other cities, for some reason other mayors have more power and control over how things are being done and get completed. At least that is the sense I get with how Allers has been as mayor acting like he doesn’t have power to make heads roll to get things done in this town. It’s a joke, really!
Jim, thank you for your service after the storm when you and Dan along with BTR was the only way we were getting any information, then as Vice mayor while on council and your continued service as you finish out your term. Your experience has been invaluable to all of us.
Likewise, Vice Mayor Atterholt. Thank you for your service to our community.
Is Allers going to pass the baton as well? We need to have someone who can speed things up and focus on cleaning up this island and stop focusing on the sand and the lights. I’m still looking at smashed houses, debris and dead trees. It’s time we move on..3 yrs is just want too long.
Carol, Dan is doing a great job!! Why aren’t you upset with some developers like Myerside that rushed to get approved (asking for way too much density) over 16 months ago and now tell us that they won’t put shovels in the ground for another year and probably more than a year after that before it is built? How can you blame that on Allers.
Robin, look at what I said…did I even mention density? I was talking about smashed houses, debris and dead trees. No one said a word about density or development or shovels. Stay on topic and to Lynn who commented below…..Why do you need to know who I am? I am a home owner on FMB and a full time resident. Who are you Lynn….do tell. Do I not have the right to say we should not still have smashed houses standing? I should not mention dead trees all over the island? Piles of debris help the look of the island? I have yet to hear a tourist say “gee I love to take pics of the island with palm trees with no tops on them.” Why would you ask me if I can work faster? Are the tax payers now supposed to working on cleaning up the island? Taking down dead trees? Are you insinuating Allers does that work? LOL
Carol, I would bet you that Dan has put in more work to speed things up than almost anyone else both in physical labor, working with the county, the state and even the federal government for monies and assistance. He is at almost all the events on the beach, he keeps everyone up to speed on what’s going on, and he always listens to our concerns. I don’t know who you think does more than he does, he even cuts his personal time short, to go to a school board meeting that they snuck a last minute agenda item on trying to go back on an agreement about the beach school. WOW! Just wow!
You better watch how much you bet or you’ll lose all your money! You should never bet on what you’re not a 100/% sure. I bet you don’t live here and I bet I’m 100% right!
Please run for the town council in the next election, as you seem to have answers to everything, not withstanding due process and property owner rights. I agree that staff in town council should have acted more expeditiously in some of the code, compliance matters, but a lot of the issues you complain of have legal consequences to which you are obviously unaware.
If you only knew…..
Who are you?
You can do the work faster somehow?
Please inform us.
What do you know that he doesn’t?
Seriously. If you have a plan let us all in on it.
