The Sand Spur Removal Project

(By Robert Howell) A few weeks ago the Audubon society requested volunteers to collect Sand Spurs from the south beach of Estero Island. Led by the Audubon's Brad Cornell, many volunteers showed up to help for the project. folks from Turtle Time came out, local residents helped, there was even a class from the Lee County school district.

18th Annual FMB Tapa Hop Is On

The yearly Chamber of Commerce Tapa Hop will be held October 29 from 3p.m to 10 p.m. The trolley will take you to 7 Fort Myers Beach restaurants. Town Approves 2020-2021 Budget

On Monday night the Fort Myers Beach Town Council adopted the final operating ad valorem millage rate for fiscal year 2020-2021 at .9500 mills (.9500 for each $1,000 of assessed valuation). The current year rolled-back rate is .9151 mils. The final operating millage rate is 3.51% greater than the rolled-back rate.

Town Renews Contract With Herin

Attorney John Herin will continue to provide legal services for the town for at least another year. Herin's firm gets paid $10,500 per month and he says there are months his firm provides more service than the town pays for.

Ken Conidiaris: Just Give Us A Chance

Lani Kai owner Ken Conidiaris came before the town council last night urging the council not to pass a Nuisance Abatement Board, which he believes targets his hotel. In July 22-year old Johnny Jackson was killed on the Lani Kai property. Discussion about a Nuisance Abatement Board began immediately after that incident.

Nuisance Abatement Board Ordinance Passes

By a vote of 3-2 the Fort Myers Beach town council approved an ordinance to create a 7-member Nuisance Abatement Board. The swing yes vote to get the ordinance passed was cast by Councilman Bill Veach. Mayor Ray Murphy and Vice Mayor Rexann Hosafros voted against.

Sanibel Ditching Plastic Bags

The City of Sanibel is distributing 3,200 complementary biodegradable bags to homeowners as the October 1st deadline for the elimination of polyethylene-based plastic bags from Sanibel's yard waste stream approaches.
