Beach Renourishment Bid Opening Moved

Bids will now be opened Friday for the massive pipeline beach renourishment project the town is hoping to start in June. The bids were originally expected to be opened yesterday. The first round of bids for this project came in $10 million over the $22 million budget.

Beginning Monday, April 29, Fort Myers Beach residents will only have to put their trash, recycling and yard waste to the curb once a week. Garbage, recycling and yard waste to be collected on the same day.

Fort Myers Beach Town Council member Karen Woodson plans to speak during public comment today at the Lee County Board of Commissioners meeting. The County is expected to approve a contract with Stantec to design a new fishing pier on Fort Myers Beach.

The Return of The Cross

Last Friday the cross that had been attached to Lau Hall at St. Peter ELCA was installed on the remaining sanctuary building. As St. Peter works to restore its main building, the cross now returns as a beacon of faith to so many Fort Myers Beach Islanders.

The 4th of July Parade is Back

The Town of Fort Myers Beach will soon be sending out applications for floats and other groups that want to participate in the 4th of July parade. Having the 4th of July parade back is another sign the beach is returning to normal. There will also be fireworks at 9PM on the 4th.

Earlier this week, by a vote of 4-2, the Fort Myers Beach Local Planning Agency denied a request from Freeland Holdings to make a Future Land Use Development Map Amendment. That was the first step Freeland needed approved in their quest to build 3 hotels.

Base of The Bridge Project Delayed Again

The Florida Department of Transportation tells Beach Talk Radio News the base-of-the bridge project, that's been in the works for years, will not begin until August. The project was expected to start this month. FDOT says the contractor needs more time to purchase materials.

Your New Pier Will Be 4 Feet Wider

On Tuesday the Lee County Board of Commissioners is expected to approve a $1.18 million contract with consulting company Stantec to design a replacement fishing pier on Fort Myers Beach. The design phase of the project is expected to take 18 months.

Our friend Kathy Nash is chairing a new Adopt-A-Nest Program at Lovers Key State Park. Kathy says this is a way for the public to become more involved in the upcoming turtle season, while raising money to help protect the nests and also to help the park.
