Several of you reached out to us last week to see if we had heard anything about a possible dead body near Bird Island near the Matanzas Pass Bridge. On July 11th, we filed a media request with the Lee County Sheriff inquiring whether a body was found in the area, which is by the Matanzas Pass Bridge. LCSO responded to our request Monday

The LCSO report says that on July 10th at about 4PM, the Lee County Sheriff Office was dispatched to the waters off Matanzas Bridge for a possible deceased person in the water. Deputy Vernon Speak did go out into the water and confirm an obvious deceased person. A witness was in the area and did said he was on his kayak in the water and discovered the deceased, face down in the water, and called 911. The person found was a white male, approximately 70 years old, with no further identifiers.

Homicide Detective Tim Davis and Hannah Reppert of the medical examiners office, and Sanibel Fire Rescue went out into the water to retrieve the body. The man was then taken to the medical examiners office.

LCSO later identified the man as 65-year old Doug Brehm, a local who enjoyed being a pirate and showing off his Parrot to people around the beach. His friends said Doug did not know how to swim and his bird was also missing from his boat.
