Lee County, in partnership with Healthy Start Southwest Florida, collected donations of more than 14,500 diapers and related items to promote health and provide economic stability for families as part of the first-ever Diaper Drive.
The diapers, baby wipes, cream and other items were collected in October at five Lee County Parks & Recreation sites, seven branches of the Lee County Public Library and two Healthy Start Southwest Florida locations. In all, donations represented a retail value of $5,222.
Healthy Start Southwest Florida operates the Southwest Florida Diaper Bank, which has served 32,115 families. Statistics indicate that half of these families miss an average of one week of work each month due to an insufficient supply of diapers for their childcare providers and 48 percent of families delay changing a diaper to extend the available supply.
