Herb enthusiast Wendy Sprague will address how to raise herbs in a windowsill container or outside in a planter at the Fort Myers Beach Library at 10AM Monday, February 2nd. This is an Estero Island Garden Club program. Sprague will also discuss the health benefits of herbs and provide recipes.

The Garden Club says the history of using herbs spans millennia, from Paleolithic times to today, with roots in ancient civilizations like Sumer, Egypt, China, and India. “Key figures like Hippocrates, known as the ‘Father of Medicine’, emphasized the importance of nature in healing. Herbs served as the foundation for modern pharmaceuticals, with willow bark leading to aspirin, and they remain vital in traditional systems worldwide, connecting ancient wisdom with contemporary health practices.”

Herbs can offer significant health benefits, acting as potent sources of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory compounds, vitamins (A, C, K), and minerals, helping protect against cell damage, chronic diseases, infections, and supporting brain health, digestion, and immunity, while also adding flavor to food and reducing the need for salt.

Wendy Sprague is also a Fort Myers-Lee County Garden Council Officer and a Master Gardener Volunteer.
