On Monday, the Fort Myers Beach Town Council approved a waiver to allow Jim Dunlap to serve on the Audit Committee. The waiver is needed in order to allow community members to serve on 2 committees. Dunlap is also a member of the LPA.
The Audit Committee has not met since last year. The monthly meetings have been canceled every month this year with no explanation. The Audit Committee is scheduled to meet September 14th at 9AM and we will carry that meeting live.
On the show Sunday the Mayor was critical of this committee not meeting and said some of the financial problems the town is now experiencing may have been caught earlier if the Audit Committee had been meeting.
Maryann Sheely, a member of the Audit Committee for 3 years was upset with the criticism the committee was getting. She said she’s been ready to meet and did not understand or been told why all the meetings have been canceled. She said, “I really don’t like being called out on social media.”
I know Marianne and she had a perfect right to the statement she made…why were the audit committee meetings canceled and who canceled them? She is a volunteer on this committee! Someone find these answers and quit blaming the committee when they had no control over the meetings being canceled!
Who on earth do you think cancelled the meetings?

Benny, do you know that for a fact? I would think the committee members would know, but they don’t ☹️ Also go on the town website and look up what that committee is responsible for!!!!!
Why have an “audit” committee in the first place?

If they can’t look into or eyeball where public funds and town money are going then why have the committee and why refer to it as an audit committee? I don’t get it.
They are as useless.

It’s August. The Audit Committee hasn’t had a meeting all year long.
Two town employees are on a paid suspension, presumably for questionable grant money issues. The town (the town’s taxpayers) now face the unfortunate burden of possibly paying $50,000 or more for a forensic audit, that the town can hardly afford. $50,000 for an audit to investigate funds that the Audit Committee may have discovered had they met regularly.
