Jatavion Craig, who’s accused of the Memorial Day shooting on Fort Myers Beach, is scheduled to appear in court Thursday, August 26th at 8:30AM. Craig is being represented by the Public Defender’s office. He’s still in the Lee County jail.
The 18-year old was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, a 3rd degree felony, and firing a weapon in public or on residential property, a first degree misdemeanor. Bail was set at $250,000 on the felony charge and $75,000 on the misdemeanor.
Following the 911 call that shots were fired on Fort Myers Beach, over 40 deputies eventually responded, the first few were on scene in minutes as there were extra deputies on the beach for the holiday weekend. Others quickly arrived from surrounding areas not knowing early on if they had an active shooter situation on their hands.
Even with the quick response from deputies, Craig was able to evade capture and exit the island with the departing crowd. However with so many cell-phone recordings of the incident, LCSO was able to screen grab a photo of someone holding a gun. That person was apparently Craig who was then arrested by local police in Alabama only three days later.
