Friends of the Everglades Executive Director Eve Samples will be joined by Carol Lindsey, a Steering Committee member of the Florida Clinicians for Climate Action, Sierra Club’s Stop the Burn organizing representative Patrick Ferguson, and Friends of the Everglades Board member Robert Mitchell to discuss new research underscoring the dangers of burning and the movement to end the practice for good.
Almost half a million acres of sugarcane is burned for harvest every year from October to May in the Everglades Agricultural Area south of Lake Okeechobee. As the fields burn, residents in surrounding communities struggle to breathe.
Friends of the Everglades will livestream the event on Facebook and YouTube channel from 12 – 1 p.m.
If these were the more affluent communities, there would be more action taken. I feel for these people. I have no concern for the sugar farm corporate owners. I do understand the plight of the workers who are just trying to earn a living.
