Sanibel/Captiva President John Lai says there are now 26 restaurants open on Sanibel and the island could use a little help getting local residents over to Sanibel to spend some money and bring those restaurants back to life. The Lee County Board of Commissioners agreed.
For the next six Sundays (through September 10th) the $6.00 toll to get over to Sanibel will be waived.
Toll collection nets about $30,000 per Sunday, with 79% going to Lee County and 21% to Sanibel. All in, the two municipalities will lose about $180,000 from the toll holiday.
Commissioner Cecil Pendergrass wondered if other municipalities like Cape Coral would ask for a bridge break next and asked if Sanibel would consider giving up a portion of their rev share for the toll abatement weeks.
