Mike and Dawn Miller will put shovels in the ground for the new Whale on Friday at 1PM. The Whale will be the first new restaurant/bar to be rebuilt after Hurricane Ian. The plan is to be open in the fall of 2025.

Beach Talk Radio will broadcast the groundbreaking live.

The new 36-foot tall Whale building will be 2 stories over base flood elevation, with enclosed space on the first floor. The Miller’s and Greg Von Krumreig purchased The Whale from Doc Ford’s owner Marty Harrity in June of 2022. Three months later Hurricane Ian destroyed the building. Harrity owned The Whale for 25 years.

Once the construction begins on The Whale, the Miller’s say they will move their tent down to the former Tuckaway Cafe building, which they purchased after the storm. They plan to eventually turn that building into a new restaurant called Sandy Bottom. The Sandy Bottom proposal goes before the LPA today and, if approved, will include an outdoor Tiki structure which will cover outdoor entertainment.
