The New Years Eve fireworks were canceled earlier this year due to COVID and yesterday the Town Council decided to cancel the Times Square Ball Drop as well. Every New Years Eve, Fort Myers Beach hosts an event in Times Square to count down the clock to the start of a new year with a ball drop above the poinsettia decorated tree in Times Square.

The town decided against encouraging people to gather in one place due to COVID.

The free cupcakes that are given out every year have also been canceled. According to long-time Fort Myers Beach resident Betty Simpson, the free cupcake idea was started by the old, original Civic Association when Fort Myers Beach first incorporated in 1995. “I still have a t-shirt from that day that is signed by all 5 of the brand new council members. What wonderful memories.”
