Shortly after the Governor announced he was invalidating all local COVID-19 ordinances, the town of Fort Myers Beach Town Council rescinded its mask and social distancing ordinance. Councilman Bill Veach was the lone no vote.

Fort Myers Beach has had a mask and social distancing ordinance in place for over a year. The ordinance has never been enforced and, in recent months, it’s been largely ignored by local residents as well as elected officials who passed the ordinance.

Restaurants were threatened with fines if employees were not wearing masks while serving customers. Not a single ticket was ever written by code enforcement or the Lee County Sheriff’s department.

Lee County has never had a mask mandate in place.
