While the restrooms facilities, the dock, trash, water and laundry for mooring field residents will continue to be provided by Matanzas, the Fort Myers Beach town staff will take over management of those services from Matanzas next month.
The announcement was made this week and the change will go into effect October 1st. The Town Council recently approved a new deal with Matanzas to continue to provide the services as the town continues to search for its own location on the beach to house the services.
The town will also lease office space from Harbour House on Old San Carlos Boulevard for staff to manage the mooring field services.
The Town of Fort Myers Beach currently operates a 70-slip mooring field east of Matanzas Pass Bridge and is planning to expand the mooring field to add an additional 19 moorings west of Matanzas Pass Bridge accommodating vessels up to a length of 85 feet.
The town has been looking at options to take all the services in-house and is planning to expand the mooring field. With property limited on Fort Myers Beach, the town has been struggling to find a permanent home for the restrooms, laundry facilities, trash and water, so they can take everything in house.
That’s a great idea, generate more business transactions for sport, drink, food, shopping and fees which is excellent for the City of FMB and local restaurants, business owners . Create more attraction, and interesting area for tourists.
Beach residents need to oppose any expantion of the mooring fields and oppose town managment of services. There are four marinas in close proximity to the mooring fields. The Marinas can offer to service the boaters for market pricing and compete for that business. The town has no business opperating a harbor, or marina, or spending taxpayer money to provide facilities. Managment of hook space can be let out to bid and managed privately.

How do FMB mooring fees compare to other tourist driven locations??
People on moored sail boats spend little money as possible and want free restrooms and showers. Besides charging for the moorings charge for use of restrooms and showers.
What is the cost to benefit ratio for the mooring field? Can the town put this in perspective so the people can understand what their tax dollars are being used for. There has to be a benefit for the towns people to justify this. Not sure the businesses or residents benefit at all on this deal. Can we find this out?
