In the ongoing defamation case Karen Woodson and John King have filed against Bill Veach and Ray Murphy, the latest court filing shows that the former council member and former Mayor have not paid their half of a mediation bill and now the issue is in front of the court.
Arbitrator Richard Mancini has filed a civil action against Veach and Murphy after repeated attempts to get payment. Veach and Murphy owe Mancini $1,772.50 which is half of his bill for $3,545.
Mancini is also asking a judge to award him an additional $550 in sanctions for having to bring the matter before the court. Mancini is asking for the $550 because he now needs to hire an attorney to try to get his money. He may ask for more if the attorney fees mount up on him.
An arbitration hearing was held on Zoom back in May. Mancini started sending invoices in June (see below). All of them went unanswered. The results from the arbitration were never made public but we know they did not end the matter and both sides remained far apart.
King and Woodson filed a defamation lawsuit against Veach and Murphy after they led a successful recall election. Veach and Murphy claimed King and Woodson violated Florida’s Sunshine Law and accepted gifts from developers who came before the town council. They did not need proof of those allegations to file a recall. King and Woodson claim they are lies and damaged their reputations which resulted in this defamation lawsuit going through the courts now.

The most common slang term for someone who fails to pay their debts is a ‘deadbeat’. Dead beat: Someone who deliberately avoids paying debts or financial obligations.
Failing to pay a debt most often displays irresponsibility and a lack of integrity. When a person chooses not to pay what they owe, it can show several negative character traits —
Irresponsibility: The person fails to take care of basic duties and financial agreements.
Unreliability: Others cannot trust this person to keep their word or follow through on promises.
Dishonesty: Breaking a financial agreement is a form of breaking a promise, which damages trust.
Avoidance: Hiding from the lender or ignoring bills shows a weakness in facing hard problems.
This says a lot about the character of Veech and Murphy. Many local residents have been misled by these two who engaged this community in legal discord then refuse to own up when the bill comes due.
