How did the Women of Irish Heritage get started? Here’s the history…
In 1973, a group of 16 Irish women from the Northern New Jersey/New York area banded together to form The Women of Irish Heritage. Rumor has it that the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh suggested there be a Woman’s Auxiliary and the original 16 women said, “Hell No” and established the WOMEN OF IRISH HERITAGE.
These 16 women were the driving force behind an organization that continues their dedication to the promotion of Irish culture, friendship, and charitable work. Starting from scratch, the group drafted the Bylaws, developed membership criteria, created the logo, and outlined the calendar of events – containing standard events that are continued to this day. They support local charities through different fundraising events throughout the year. They are an active organization that supports Irish festivals and events and participates in several St. Patrick’s Day Parades.
The success of the organization in Northern New Jersey has led to the formation of several locations that include the WOIH Jersey Shore, WOIH South Jersey and now WOIH SWFL. Our organization provides a place to celebrate our Irish Heritage and dedicate our purpose of keeping Irish traditions alive and giving back throughout the community.
