All holiday weekend long Fort Myers Beachgoers had to navigate a little extra water on the sand. Many believe the problem was caused by the last big storm that came through the area and washed out a lot of the sand leaving holes large enough that eventually filled up with water.
The situation also caused a problem for many businesses on the beach that put out chairs for customers along the area from Pierside Restaurant all the way down to Shuckers.
Calusa WaterkeeperJohn Cassani tells Beach Talk Radio News that beach restoration can be a temporary fix but climate change is the root cause with more extreme hydrology and more intense storm driven events. “At some point sea level rise will be more of an issue similar to what we are now seeing in SE Florida and the Keys described as sunny day flooding.”
