On Wednesday Executive Assistant Fire Chief Ron Martin (left) was unanimously voted in as the next Fire Chief of Fort Myers Beach. He will now negotiate an employment agreement with the Fire District’s attorney before taking over for Chief Matt Love, perhaps as early as next week.

Love notified the board that he has accepted the job as Fire Chief in St. Cloud Minnesota.
The St. Cloud fire department has 70 firefighters in a community of about 68,000 people. Fort Myers Beach has an off-season population of about 7,000. During season that population jumps to about 40,000, according to the Fire Department website.

Love will stay on for three months as an advisor to help with the transition to Martin as the department’s new leader. Love has been the Fort Myers Beach Fire Chief since 2016.

A ceremony to celebrate the change in command will be held at a later date.

  1. Ron Martin is a good man. Thoroughly professional, smart, ethically grounded for a department with spotty history in those qualities.

  2. Fire department couldn’t have a ceremony for the 20th anniversary of 9/11 but can have one for a change of staff….
We certainly appreciate our Fire Department but is a ceremony needed?
