On Tuesday the Lee County Board of Commissioners approved two contracts, totaling $14 million, to repair damaged sidewalks, the roadway, and pedestrian safety items along Estero Boulevard caused by Hurricane Ian. The work begins next month and is expected to take a year to complete.
The work cannot be done late at night because of the proximity to residential neighborhoods and turtle nesting season.
The contracts awarded this week were:
- An $8.4 million, low-bid contract to Wright Construction for work including repairing and replacing damaged curb and gutter, sidewalk, pavement, pedestrian handrail, school flashers, flashing beacons, and pervious paver drainage.
- A $1.4 million contract to Johnson Engineering to perform Construction Engineering and Inspection Services for the project. The services include consulting for contract administration, inspection, and material sampling and testing.
The project is partially funded by the Federal Highway Administration’s Emergency Relief Program and partially through a state appropriation. The project budget and total grant funding was established as $13.7 million for both construction and construction inspection to account for any cost overruns that may be determined and approved by Florida Department of Transportation during construction.

Ian damage? No, I think that is just an excuse. This was the shoddy work that was done by the most expensive contractor that they could find. AND once again they claim they can’t work at night because of turtles and the residential area. Turtle season is almost over and locals will not care about night noise. We don’t want more traffic. The truth is that the companies don’t want to work at night. WHO OK’d this project to start during season???
How much of this work is involved in the repair of the ill conceived center brick paver design? Why oh why would you want to pitch a road to the center??
Major road work during peak season is a Lee County tradition.
Much like renourishing beaches not long before another hurricane.
Agree with all of the above comments but, the powers that be don’t care so all this is fruitless. I would rather shut my windows at night then be stuck in traffic all season. Common sense
Yea forget about us locals going over the bridge this winter. Enjoy.😉
The excuse for not working nights doesn’t cut it. The turtle season will be over and we are dealing with noise in the street right now with Big Carlos Bridge. I would rather shut my windows they be stuck all season in traffic!
But, the powers that be don’t really care so i know this comment is fruitless!
The excuse of not working at night doesn’t cut it turtle season is almost over and we are all living with noise of construction
During “peak season”? I can see the backups to the South End forming already.
Based on the time it took to do 7 miles of roadway. This should be done in about 6 years. At that point it’s time to start over. Possibly add some manhole covers right where you walk just like down Estero so every damn one lines up with your tires and you go bouncing down the road. Can’t not have some trip hazards to make your walk easy.
