On Tuesday, the Lee Board of County Commissioners voted to approve a supplemental funding agreement with the Florida Department of Transportation to fully fund construction inspection services for hurricane-related repairs to Estero Boulevard.

The county expects the work to begin in March (the busiest month of the season on Fort Myers Beach). A spokesperson for Lee County was not sure where the project would begin on the boulevard.

Initially, about $1.04 million in federal and state funding was allocated to the county for the construction inspection services. Following the federal process, the county solicited construction engineering inspection services, and negotiations with the top ranked firm resulted in a cost of about $1.4 million. Florida DOT was able to program an additional $392,031 in funding to cover the full cost of the CEI contract.

Last October commissioners voted to approve two contracts to repair damage to sidewalks, the roadway and pedestrian safety items along Estero Boulevard caused by Hurricane Ian, including the CEI services pending the agreement approved today.

In their press release Lee County said: “Hurricane Ian made landfall on Sept. 28, 2022, as a Category 4 storm with damaging storm surge that submerged Estero Boulevard on Fort Myers Beach. While temporary repairs were performed to safely reopen the road, it has yet to be restored to pre-storm conditions. The project budget and total grant funding was established as $13.7 million for both construction and construction inspection.”
