Out of a possible score of 250, Fort Myers Beach Town Council Vice Mayor Scott Safford gave Town Manager Will McKannay a score of 242. It was the lowest score of all 5 council members.
Safford’s lowest scores came in under the category of reporting where he gave McKannay a score of 22 out of a possible 25. The council scored McKannay in 10 different categories including staffing, citizen relations, supervision, fiscal management, community, policy execution and several others. Each category was graded on a 1-5 scale with 5 being the best.
In Safford’s notes, he said he wants McKannay to improve by staffing the finance department, and making it a priority to get the Audit Committee to meet. The last several Audit Committee meetings have been canceled. Safford wants the council to start seeing monthly financial reports. He also wants the Town Manager to do a better job of reporting to the council when things happen like accidents and arrests, “things potentially going to the media.” Safford did not specify what he meant by that.
Council member Rebecca Link gave McKannay a score of 249 out of 250, the highest grade of all 5 members. Mayor Dan Allers and Council member John King scored him a 248 and Council member John McLean gave McKannay a 247.
The Town Manager is evaluated once a year during a public Town Council meeting after submitting their grading sheets to the town’s H.R. Department.
McKannay was also given a 5% raise which jumped his base salary to $210,000 per year.

So, what things is Safford afraid of “potentially going to the media.”
Perhaps he, along with the rest of TC, would like to know about accidents, arrests, et al before reading about it online or in the local newspapers. If I were on TC, I’d certainly like to know about it first. It might not be as untoward as you want to believe.
