The town of Fort Myers Beach broke away from Lee County in the mid 90’s when community leaders feared the county would approve any and all tall buildings that came across their desk. Next month the town will celebrate incorporation with an afternoon ceremony on Friday, March 6th.
Anita Cereceda was the first Mayor of Fort Myers Beach after incorporation. “30 years have gone by in the blink of an eye…and perhaps the most important thing I could say about this town and it’s “accomplishments” is this community’s ability to overcome and recover from any crisis…hurricanes, covid, elections…FMB’s resilience is it’s greatest accomplishment. Road projects, Comprehensive plans, Town Halls, beach renourishments… none of it would mean a thing without the folks who live and have lived here.”
The celebration will begin at 2PM at Bayside park with a Walk of History and Art Walk featuring artwork by the Fort Myers Beach Art Association. Historical pictures of the island will be on display at the Estero Island Historical Society.
The walk will continue on to Times Square for a 3PM ceremony with speakers and cupcakes.
