Both lawsuits are a result of the murder that took place on the property of the hotel last month. Fort Myers attorney Joe North is representing both Thomasina Daniels, the mother of 22-year old Johnny Jackson, who was the man killed, and Jackson’s cousin Traviasia Blanks.

According to Michael Braun of the Fort Myers News-Press Blanks was one of two people shot during the shooting. Blanks suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The Thomasina Daniels lawsuit claims wrongful death. The Traviasia Blanks lawsuit is a personal injury action.

Since the murder ownership has been trying to repair its relationship with the community, announcing several changes that are being made in an attempt to make the facility safer. Last week many resident voiced their outrage with the number of Sheriff department and fire department calls that are made every year to the hotel. The residents attended the Fort Myers Beach town council meeting and used the public comment period to tell their elected leaders they expected change.

One day later a lawsuit filed by Chris Patton to try to delay the TPI/Margaritaville resort that was unanimously approved by the town council, with financial backing from the Lani Kai, was dropped.

No arrests have been made by the Lee County Sheriff’s Department for Jackson’s murder. They have confirmed they have a person of interest in custody on an unrelated matter and the investigation is ongoing.

The Lani Kai has 20 calendar days to respond to the lawsuits.
