According to Fort Myers Beach Public Works Director Chelsea O’Riley the next stakeholders meeting to discuss the lights on Estero Boulevard will be the second week in May. An exact date has not been set yet.

O’Riley told the Public Safety Committee the consultant is in town this week doing field work and will be providing the town with options at that next meeting. She said it was important the consultant came to Fort Myers Beach prior to turtle season, which officially starts in May.

The biggest challenge to getting lights on Estero Boulevard has been finding the proper lights, at a reasonable cost, that do not have a negative impact on the turtles.

Public Safety Committee Chairman John Goggin asked when recommendations would be ready. Even though the contract for the lighting consultant runs through the end of the year O’Riley told the committee the consultant will provide options ready at the next stakeholder meeting next month. Here’s the audio of what O’Riley told the committee.

Consultant REDD Inc. out of Scottsdale, Arizona will be paid up to $185,000 to develop a plan for lights on Estero Boulevard. The funding is coming out of the town’s reserves as the item was not budgeted for.
